Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Darren Soto (D-FL), Buddy Carter (R-GA), and Adam Schiff (D-CA) have introduced the Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act of 2024 in the House of Representatives. This bipartisan legislation aims to reauthorize funding for critical research and awareness efforts at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).
CHD is the most common birth defect, with nearly 40,000 babies born with the condition each year in the United States. It remains the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths in the country. Despite medical advancements that have improved the quality and length of life for CHD patients, there is still a need for specialized routine care for the growing population of adults living with the condition, which currently stands at approximately 2 million.
The Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act seeks to address these challenges by extending the National Congenital Heart Disease Research, Surveillance, and Awareness Program through Fiscal Year 2029. This program aims to further the understanding of CHD and investigate its impact on patients' lifespans, with the ultimate goal of developing lifelong, specialized care for individuals with congenital heart defects.
Congressman Bilirakis, a co-founder of the Congenital Heart Caucus, expressed his support for the legislation, stating, "Our legislation will bring us one step closer to enhancing better treatment options and improving outcomes for all patients suffering from this condition." Congressman Soto also emphasized the importance of advocating for heart disease research and support monitoring programs.
Congressman Carter, who is also a health care professional, highlighted the significance of reauthorizing critical funding for research and awareness, stating, "By reauthorizing this critical funding for research and awareness, we can save lives and improve the quality of life for the millions of children and adults who live with CHD."
Representative Schiff emphasized the need for continued support and resources for individuals with CHD, stating, "This bipartisan effort underscores our commitment to a future where every individual with CHD has the support and resources to thrive beyond their diagnosis."
The Adult Congenital Heart Association, Conquering CHD, Mending Little Hearts, and the Children's Heart Foundation have expressed their support for this legislation, recognizing its importance in improving the lives of CHD patients.
The Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act of 2024 aims to provide the necessary funding and support for research, education, and awareness of congenital heart disease. By extending the National Congenital Heart Disease Research, Surveillance, and Awareness Program, this legislation will contribute to better treatment options and improved outcomes for patients with CHD.
