U.S. Congressman Gus Bilirakis has expressed his support for the appointment of Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State by President-Elect Donald J. Trump. Bilirakis highlighted Rubio's leadership qualities and his understanding of international relations, particularly with regard to America's adversaries and allies.

Bilirakis stated, "I am thrilled that my good friend and fellow Floridian, Senator Marco Rubio has been named the incoming Secretary of State by President-Elect Donald Trump." He emphasized Rubio's experience as a policymaker and his personal background as a Cuban-American, which gives him insight into the challenges posed by socialism and authoritarian regimes.

The congressman also noted the significance of Rubio's appointment for U.S. interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. Bilirakis mentioned their collaboration on legislation such as the Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act and the US-Greece Defense and Interparliamentary Partnership Act, both signed into law during Trump's first term. These laws aimed to enhance defense partnerships between the United States, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and other regional allies.

Bilirakis further commented on Turkey's actions under President Erdogan, noting that "the Trump Administration was the first to impose sanctions against Turkey" for religious freedom violations. He expects continued accountability under Rubio's leadership at the State Department.

He concluded with optimism about future cooperation: "With Secretary Rubio in the new administration, we will continue to grow our defense and energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean and Southern Europe."
