Earlier today, Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) introduced the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025. This bipartisan legislation aims to ensure that AM radio remains a standard feature in new motor vehicles. The bill directs the Department of Transportation to mandate automakers to include AM broadcast radio as standard equipment, allowing drivers access at no additional cost.
Congressman Bilirakis emphasized the importance of maintaining a robust communication infrastructure for public safety during emergencies. "Each hurricane season, Floridians rely upon the ability to gain access to information needed to make timely and potentially lifesaving decisions," he stated. He highlighted that rural and underserved Americans still enjoy listening to AM radio broadcasts for diverse views.
Congressman Pallone echoed these sentiments, noting the critical role AM radio played during Superstorm Sandy in New Jersey. "AM radio provides a broad variety of programming and lifesaving information during emergencies," he said.
The proposed act would require the Department of Transportation, in consultation with FEMA and the FCC, to issue rules ensuring automakers maintain AM broadcast radios as standard equipment without extra charges. It also mandates clear disclosure from automakers if vehicles lack this feature before the rule's effective date. Additionally, it calls for a study by the Government Accountability Office on AM radio's importance during emergencies and potential alternatives.
