Today in Washington, DC, Congressman Gus Bilirakis reintroduced the Coastal Broadband Deployment Act. The objective of the legislation is to expedite broadband projects located within floodplains. Emphasizing broadband connectivity as essential for economic development, education, healthcare access, and emergency communication, Bilirakis highlighted the need for faster deployment in areas prone to flooding.

Despite significant federal funds earmarked for improving internet connectivity nationwide, delays due to bureaucratic processes have left many homes without adequate access. In Florida, recent hurricanes underscored the necessity of reliable internet for emergency communication and assistance. Areas without connectivity were disadvantaged when accessing timely information.

Congressman Bilirakis, addressing the issue, noted, “Several parts of my district lie within flood zones. I want to be sure that all of my constituents have access to 21st Century Technologies, enabling them to harness the potential power that these capabilities offer. Being left behind is not an option.”

The legislation aims to bridge the digital divide for approximately 21 million Americans who currently lack access to broadband technology.
