Weekly Update on Issues Impacting Your Family
August 15, 2021
Dear Neighbor,
Last week was exciting for many families as children in Pasco, Pinellas, and Hillsborough counties kicked off a new school year. I am grateful that our state has been a leader in following the science and ensuring that our students have had in-person learning opportunities available during the pandemic. Throughout the country we are seeing signs that school closures have taken a significant toll on students and families, both in terms of academic losses and emotional impacts. I know that creating and operating an in-person learning environment presented many logistical challenges. A special thanks to all the staff who have been working hard to make this another productive, safe, and fun year for everyone!

Protecting Children
We have an obligation to do a better job protecting children from online predators. Click here to learn more about how I am working to empower parents and hold Big Tech accountable.
Prioritizing Your Tax Dollars
The IRS has just reported that the American Rescue Plan, the highly partisan relief package I did not support, doled out $783.5 million to convicted criminals. There was a bipartisan amendment to keep stimulus checks from going to incarcerated prisoners, but it was rejected. As a taxpayer, I am outraged. I would hope you are as well.
Developing Better Treatments and Cures
As noted in this article, I appreciate the support of ALS and other rare disease advocates as we work to pass my STAT Act. We must do more to give hope to these patients and families. Also, check out this podcast in which we discuss the work being done to support innovation in the development of better treatments and cures of rare diseases.
Ensuring Access to Quality, Affordable Healthcare
Last week we celebrated National Health Center Week. Community Health Centers are part of what is working in our healthcare system. I have and will continue to support an expansion of these vital programs which offer high quality health care, dental treatment, and mental health services to over 26 million Americans on a sliding fee basis. More than 8 million children in the U.S. get their primary health care from a Community Health Center, which are a tremendous asset in our healthcare system. Helping Those In Need
If you rent in Pasco County and are having financial difficulty due to COVID-19, you can apply for help through one of our Pasco HE.A.R.T. Program Partners. Complete this survey to find out if you qualify.
Keeping Our Community Safe
With rising crime rates throughout the country, it is more important than ever that we support our local first responders and work together to keep our community safe. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is reminding the public to “See something, Say something! Even the smallest amount of information can help solve a case.” You can report tips to the Pasco Sheriff's Office Crime Tips Line at 1-800-706-2488 or http://new.tipsubmit.com.
Advocating for Veterans
As Veterans around the country are preparing to use their GI Bill Benefits to start classes this fall, here are a few resources that may be helpful!
Enjoying the Arts
I took a break for the arts this weekend and attended a performance of "Once." My talented caseworker, James Grenelle, was the stage manager and is a brilliant theater hand whether acting, directing, singing, or managing. During the weekday James helps hundreds of constituents with passport, IRS, Social Security, and countless other issues. I am so grateful for his service to Florida's 12th congressional district.
Community Connection
This weekend, my team was delighted to support the grand opening of The Lakes Social, a family owned small business in the Connerton area of Land O’ Lakes. It's a healthy spot to hangout, enjoy gourmet meal replacement shakes, and energy teas. Congratulations to owners Matt and Megan!
My team also enjoyed Sunshine Supply Company’s recent grand opening in downtown Tarpon Springs. Congratulations to small business owners, B.J. and Kris Wolf. Best wishes for your continued success.
Additionally, a member of my team was proud to attend the recent grand opening of Lyons Den Sports Performance Center in Wesley Chapel. Congrats to owner Connor Lyons and best wishes for your continued success!
Constituent Corner
The message below was recently sent from a constituent after my team helped him with his unemployment claim:
Thank you for helping me finally get my last stimulus check. I had been a victim of identity theft and it was a nightmare trying to unravel it with the IRS. However, I called your office and James was amazing. He was patient and thorough. I know I never would have gotten anywhere without his help. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
This is just one example of the work we do each day. Constituent services are a critical element of our congressional office. The federal government is a massive operation, and my office is available if you ever need assistance in navigating the bureaucracy or cutting through red tape. We are here to serve you!
Sincerely,
Gus Bilirakis
Member of Congress
