Pasco County Fire Rescue issued the following announcement on November 5.
Did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening.
· Purchase a space heater with the seal of an independent testing laboratory.
· Plug space heaters directly into the wall outlet. NEVER use a power strip or extension cord.
· Place space heaters on a solid, flat surface.
· Make sure your heater has an auto shut-off to turn the heater off if it tips over.
· Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.
· Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
· Never use an oven or grill to heat your home.
· Make sure heating equipment and chimneys have been cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional.
· Ensure all smoke alarms have been tested and are working properly.
