Pasco County Fire Rescue issued the following announcement on March 4.
If you live in an apartment or multi-family dwelling, you need to think ahead and be prepared in the event of a fire. It is important to know the fire safety features in your building and work together with neighbors to help keep the building as fire-safe as possible. Here are a few important tips to follow:
-Make sure smoke alarms are installed in each sleeping room, outside every sleeping area, and on each level of the home.
- Test all smoke alarms at least monthly.
- Learn your building's evacuation plan and practice your escape plan.
- Know the locations of all available exit stairs from your floor in case the nearest one is blocked by fire or smoke.
- Make sure all exit and stairwell doors are clearly marked, not locked or blocked by security bars and clear of clutter.
- When the smoke alarm sounds, get out of the building quickly and stay out.
- When exiting, pull the fire alarm on your way out to notify the fire department and your neighbors.
