Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) has successfully convinced the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to cover Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) for Veterans who rely on insulin or have a problematic history of hypoglycemia. CGMs are devices that automatically and continuously monitor blood glucose levels. This change will benefit approximately 80,000 Veterans who live in Florida's 12th Congressional District and millions of others across the nation.

"Veterans deserve the best possible care available," said Rep. Bilirakis. "CGMs offer detailed data that can help patients and doctors better manage their care. This change will make a real difference in the lives of Veterans."

The decision by the VA to cover CGMs for Veterans comes after a recent change by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to also cover the device for Medicare beneficiaries. Rep. Bilirakis and Diabetes Caucus co-chair Diana DeGette sent a letter to the VA requesting similar coverage for Veterans after learning of Medicare's policy change in May of 2023.

"I commend VA Secretary Denis McDonough and the staff at the VA for being responsive to this request and moving quickly to implement this change," added Rep. Bilirakis.

The use of CGMs can significantly improve the health of Veterans by providing real-time data on blood glucose levels. Patients can monitor their levels at any time and make more informed decisions about their diet, physical activity, and medications. This technology has been proven to have positive health benefits, which is why it is now being covered by both Medicare and the VA.

The CGMs will now be accessible to more Veterans, allowing them to better manage their diabetes and improve their overall health. This move by the VA demonstrates their commitment to providing the best possible care for Veterans.

In conclusion, Rep. Bilirakis' efforts have led to the VA's decision to cover Continuous Glucose Monitors for Veterans, following a similar policy change by Medicare. This change will benefit millions of Veterans, including those in Florida's 12th Congressional District. The use of CGMs will provide valuable data to patients and doctors, helping them make informed decisions about their diabetes management. This is a significant step towards improving the healthcare and well-being of our nation's Veterans.
