The United States Department of Justice has awarded Citrus County $5,375,000 through the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) to hire 43 new deputies. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to increase community policing capacity and reduce crime, with a total of nearly $217 million distributed to 394 agencies. Citrus County was among the top five highest recipients of funding in the country.

Citrus County, experiencing a population explosion of 65 percent over the past three decades, has been facing a shortage of law enforcement personnel. Congressman Gus Bilirakis, while not advocating for excessive government spending, recognizes the importance of ensuring his community receives its fair share of federal resources. He stated, "It is important for me to be transparent about my efforts to prioritize important community needs and provide targeted support." Bilirakis believes that these funds will give Sheriff Prendergast and his team the tools they need to keep the community safe.

Sheriff Mike Prendergast expressed his gratitude for the funding, stating, "I am extremely humbled that Citrus County was able to receive the funding to hire 43 new deputies." He emphasized the urgent need for these additional resources in addressing staffing concerns and providing excellence in public safety. The support of Congressman Bilirakis and the United States Department of Justice has allowed the Sheriff's Office to spearhead their five-year plan effectively.

In addition to securing federal funding for his district, Congressman Bilirakis has developed a Federal Grant Support initiative within his office. This initiative involves proactive meetings with local officials to identify community needs and potential sources of federal funding. The Bilirakis grant team provides ongoing support throughout the grant process, including letters of support, workshops, and resources.

Citrus County's allocation of federal funds for law enforcement hiring is a significant step towards addressing the community's growing needs. With the support of Congressman Bilirakis and the United States Department of Justice, Sheriff Prendergast and his team can expand their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
